Channel 5 buys Will & Grace comeback

Comedy returns to the UK in January

Channel 5 has acquired the rights to air the revived Will & Grace in the UK.

The show returned for an unexpected ninth season earlier this year after more than a decade away – prompted by the success of an extended online sketch when the characters discussed the US Presidential election.

There are 16 episodes in the new season, which reunites  Debra Messing, Eric McCormack, Karen Mullally, and Sean Hayes.

Katie Keenan, vice-president of acquisitions for Channel 5 said: ‘Will & Grace is one of the greatest comedy shows of our time, so we’re thrilled to see it return to TV screens.

‘With the hugely talented cast reprising their roles and tackling the issues of today with their razor-sharp wit, Will and Grace will become must see television in 2018.’

Season 9 began airing on NBC in the States in September, where it launched with more than 10million viewers – and has already been renewed for a tenth season of ten episodes

Channel 4 broadcast the original series – which rand from 1998 to 2006 – in the UK.

The new series will launch at 10pm on Friday January 5.
