Matt Lucas film gets a Cannes screening

How To Talk to Girls At Parties

A sci-fi rom-com featuring Matt Lucas is to be screened at the Cannes Film Festival.

How To Talk to Girls At Parties is based on the short story of the same name by Neil Gaiman.

It revolves around an alien – played by Elle Fanning – who breaks away from her group touring the galaxy and meets two young inhabitants of the most dangerous place in the universe: Croydon.

Relative newcomer Alex Sharp plays Enn, a local would-be punk who falls for the alien when they meet at a party in 1977 – sparking a clash between the extraterrestrials and the punks.

The film also stars Nicole Kidman as punk queen Boadicea, who hosts the party, and also features The Thick Of It ad Getting On’s Joanna Scanlan. Neither her nor Lucas’s role has yet been announced.

The film, directed by John Cameron Mitchell and backed by Film 4 and others will be in ‘official selection’ at the 70th Cannes Film Festival, which will take place from May 17 to 28.
