Channel 4 wanted to bring Mrs Brown's Boys to TV several years before the BBC nabbed it â€" but creator Brendan O’Carroll refused to change the cast of family and friends.

The star says he told the broadcaster: ‘It's the fucking cast or it's fucking nothing’. So it came to nothing.

And he disclosed that ITV also came calling with a plan to adapt the hit stage show. But they told him he wouldn’t be allowed to drop the f-bomb, to which O'Carroll, predictably, responded: 'Well, fuck off!’

The comic was speaking at a Bafta Scotland event last night, where he added that his sitcom would have arrived on our screens sooner, were it not for Russell Brand and Jonathan Ross.

Because of the Sachsgate scandal, producer Stephen McCrum delayed pitching the sitcom to the beleaguered BBC for nine months. O'Carroll recalled McCrum telling him: 'If I hand your script in now, all they're going to see is “fuckâ€
