Comedian Jim Tavare has been seriously injured in a road accident.

He is undergoing surgery tonight after breaking multiple bones in the head-on collision.

Revealing the shocking news on the stand-up's Facebook page, the Essex-born comedian's wife Laura said: ' Please hold some good thoughts for him as he fights his way out of this.'

She posted a picture of him in intensive care showing the full extent of his injuries, although he did manage to make a thumbs-up sign.

Laura reports that he has 15 broken ribs, fractures in both breastbones, a punctured lung, multiple breaks in his right leg, and a broken neck.

The pair live in Los Angeles, after Jim, now in his early 50s, broke into the US market following his successful appearance on the 2008 series of reality series Last Comic Standing.

Last month more than 113 million Americans watched as he starred in an advert aired during the Superbowl, and he previously appeared in Californication, as an English butler to a hip-hop mogul played by Wu-Tang Clan frontman RZA.
