US Writers' Guild nominees announced
The writing teams behind shows such as Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Veep and Inside Amy Schumer – and even Ricky Gervais’s insult-laden Golden Globes monologue – are up for awards in the US.
And the shortlist for the Writers Guild Of America awards demonstrate just how big those teams can be.
The nomination for Saturday Night Live, shortlisted in the category for ‘comedy/variety – sketch series’ contains 36 writers’ names, while a sitcom such as Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has 13.
Even the Golden Globes has five writers. Producer Barry Adelman is listed as the main writer, with Dave Boone, Ricky Gervais, Jon Macks and Matthew Robinson credited for ‘special material’.
Gervais tweeted this morning: ‘WooHoo! I've been nominated for a WGA for writing all those offensive jokes at The @goldenglobes.
Brits Georgia Pritchett and Will Smith have been nominated as part of the Veep writing team; and Australian stand-up Claudia O’Doherty for Inside Amy Schumer.
The full list of comedy-related nominees is below. The Writers Guild Awards will be presented on February 19 in New York and Los Angeles.
