Bridget Christie writes a Brexit sitcom
Bridget Christie is writing a sitcom about a woman whose life is falling apart.
Set in Britain after the European referendum result, the comedy revolves around an 'outsider' central character who moves back to Gloucester to live with her father following a personal setback that is never disclosed.
'It's about Britain, now, today, it's very much set right now in Brexit Britain, so it's quite political as well' Christie told journalists India Knight and Sali Hughes on their Soho Radio show.
The character has 'no husband, no children, nothing's worked out at all' she said. 'I wanted to write a part for a middle-aged woman where she wasn't defined by her relationships … it's just about a person basically.
'That was really interesting to me. You would write a man's part like that and that would be fine. No-one would feel, "what are they? Married? Where's everything?" So it's interesting to me to see how that will pan out.'
Like the character, Christie was born and brought up in Gloucester.
The script is still being developed for a possible Channel 4 show. If commissioned,it would be her first sitcom. She wrote a pilot about the Brontë sisters in 2008, but the show – made with production house Tiger Aspect – wasn’t picked up.
