Bobby Mair's embassy stunt

Comedian Bobby Mair has come to the aid of Julian Assange after he lost his internet access.

The Ecuadorian government cut the Wikileaks founder off from the web after his site leaked American Democrats' emails, saying it does not want to interfere in foreign elections.

So this morning the stand-up rocked up to the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where Assange has been holed up for the past four years, offering to read out the internet for him.

Wearing a sign saying: 'Julian Assange's personal internet service', Mair shared news stories via a loudhailer:

To stir the waters of international diplomacy even more, the stunt was being filmed for RT, the cable broadcaster run by the Kremlin. Canadian-born Mair is a regular correspondent on Sam Delaney's News Thing, a weekly topical comedy show on the channel

Russia has long been suspected of being behind the leak of emails damaging to Hillary Clinton's campaign, while Donald Trump has been accused of being too close to Vladimir Putin's regime.

Assange has been living in the embassy since 2012, after being granted political asylum to avoid extradition to Sweden to face allegations of sex crimes – a case he fears would be a back door into a further extradition to America where he is accused of leaking classified documents.

Meanwhile Mair can next be seen on TV on Channel 4's World Of Weird tonight, learning about BDSM by training to be a 'sex pony' for a day.
