Here is the first picture of Jack Whitehall on the set of the BBC’s adaptation of Decline And Fall.

The comic plays Paul Pennyfeather, the novel’s hapless, posh yet lovable protagonist, who is sent down from Oxford after a wild party.

Filming began this week on the new three-part miniseries, which has been adapted from Evelyn Waugh’s satire by Rev creator James Wood.

Whitehall said: ‘I am extremely pleased to be a part of this amazing adaptation. I’ve been a fan of this book since I read it as a teenager and I just hope that I can do it justice.’

The  cast also includes David Suchet, Eva Longoria, Douglas Hodge, Stephen Graham, Vincent Franklin and Jason Watkins

Much of the action set in a fictional public school in the Welsh countryside, and the series will be filmed in more than 70 locations across Wales.

It is the first time the book has been adapted for TV – although last year the BBC made a version for Radio 4 with Kieran Hodgson in the lead role.

The TV version  is directed by Guillem Morales, who helmed several episodes of Inside No 9, and will air on BBC Two later this year.
