Bill Bailey to become a cartoon cat

Voicing the new Winnie The Witch cartoon

Bill Bailey is to play  the ‘loyal and lovable’ Wilbur the cat in the new cartoon adaptation of the Winnie The Witch books.

He joins Katy Brand, who voices the witch in the new Channel 5 animation, titled Winnie And Wilbur.

Bailey said: ‘I’ve got a lot in common with this cat: we’re both extremely agile, we both love cheesecake, and given half a chance, we like to fall asleep in a cosy basket.’

The series, based on the best-selling books by Valerie Thomas and Korky Paul, is due to air on Channel 5’s kids’ strand Milkshake next year.

Clair Robinson, acting head of children’s programmes at Channel 5 said, ‘Bill is the ideal choice for Wilbur and audiences will be truly tickled by his performance.  Bill and Katy are a dream team as our lead characters.’

A mammoth 52 11-minute episodes are to be made  by British-based Winduna Enterprises. The series is aimed at 4- to 7-year-olds and aims to recreate the style of Paul’s original illustrations.

Since Winnie The Witch was first published in 1987 the series has sold more than seven million copies worldwide.
