James Van Der Beek joins Sky1 comedy
Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek has joined the cast of Sky1's new family sitcom about a boy who becomes an internet millionaire.
As Chortle revealed earlier this month, Carters Get Rich also stars Kerry Godliman, John Finnemore and Rhianna Merralls, who had a small role in Julia Davis’s Camping.
The sitcom revolves around 11-year-old Harry Carter and his working-class Midlands relatives, who get rich when he creates a hugely successful app called Honc, which helps geeky boys talk to girls.
Newcomer Rio Chambers plays Harry, stage actor Rhashan Stone his dad Tony, a bus driver, Godliman his impulsive mum Liz and Merralls his sister Ellie.
Van Der Beek plays the US billionaire Trent Zebrisky who buys Honc and installs posh Etonian Oliver (Finnemore) to watch over the family.
Ash Atalla, managing director of producers Roughcut TV, described the show as a 'modern and mainstream sitcom with international appeal'.
And producer Alex Smith added: 'Carters Get Rich features one of those families we all know as they go through an extraordinary life-changing experience. The show offers an interesting portrayal of how we might all go a bit bonkers if your 11-year-old is given millions of pounds.'
Six half-hour shows have been commissioned by Sky's head of comedy on Mountague.
Developed under the working title Little Start Up, the show was created by Ian Jarvis and husband-and-wife Stuart Lane and Claire Downes, who were also behind ITV2’s job centre comedy The Job Lot. It is directed by Chris Cottam, whose credits include Dane Baptiste’s forthcoming sitcom Sunny D.
