Going 'beneath the bluster'

Nish Kumar is piloting a new topical show for Radio 4.

He will be recording a one-off show in front of an audience next month, earmarked for a late-night slot.

Spotlight Tonight follows Kumar's success as host of Radio 4 Extra's Newsjack show, which won last year's international Rose D'Or award for radio comedy.

The BBC says the new programme aims to go deeper than superficial jokes, and 'scrutinise what's actually going on beneath the bluster'.

They say: 'While jokes about George Osborne's new haircut are all well and good, do you still have that nagging suspicion there's important things going on beneath the headlines you'd like to know about?'

Last month Radio 4 piloted another in-depth topical show,Andrew Maxwell's Late Agenda. (Review().

Kumar is recording his show at the BBC Radio Theatre in Broadcasting House on May 23. See our free tickets page to apply to be in the studio audience.
