Tributes as sitcom star dies at 90

Everybody Loves Raymond star Doris Roberts has died at the age of 90.

The actress played meddling mother Marie Barone on the sitcom, winning four Emmy awards for her role.

Her family said she died in her sleep overnight on Sunday. The cause is not yet known, and she and had been healthy and active till the end

The star of the show, Ray Romano, led the tributes, saying she 'had an energy and a spirit that amazed me'

He said in a statement: 'She never stopped. Whether working professionally or with her many charities, or just nurturing and mentoring a green young comic trying to make it as an actor, she did everything with such a grand love for life and people and I will miss her dearly.'

Brad Garrett, who played her other son Robert said: 'Doris was vibrant and full of life both on and off the stage, and I am so grateful we shared so many wonderful memories. I will miss her greatly and will always remember her incredible kindness, humour, talent and heart.'

And broadcaster CBS, which aired the sitcom from 1996 to 2005, said in a statement that Roberts 'will be remembered for lighting up every room she walked into with an unparalleled combination of energy, humour, warmth and even a little bit of grit'.

Roberts's other credits include hospital drama St. Elsewhere, which earned her her first Emmy in 1983, detective series Remington Steele and the crime movie The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.
