Comedy writers up for Baftas
The writers of Peep Show, Hunderby, Catastrophe and Peter Kay’s Car Share have been shortlisted for a Bafta award.
They have been nominated in the comedy writer category of the Craft Baftas, which recognise offscreen talent.
Peep Show, which has just come to an end after nine series, is written by Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain; Hunderby by its star Julia Davis with Barunka O’Shaughnessy; Car Share by Tim Reid, Paul Coleman and its stars Kay and Sian Gibson; and Catastrophe by its stars Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan.
The shortlist demonstrates a strong preference for writer-performers rather than those who remain solely at the keyboard.
Comedy also dominates the breakthrough talent award, which will be contested by Inside No. 9 director Guillem Morales; Chewing Gum writer and star Michaela Coel; DC Moore who wrote Channel 4 comedy-drama Not Safe for Work; and Marcus Plowright who directed the documentary Muslim Drag Queens.
Catastrophe’s Ben Taylor is up for best director, the team behind Sky’s A League Of Their Own up for the entertainment craft award; and Edward Tracey up for the titles and graphic identity award for his work on making Murder In Successville look so distinctive.
Overall, Wolf Hall needs the nominations, with six. Winners will be announced on April 24.
The main Bafta TV shortlists will be announced next week.
