Smithy's back
James Corden has revived his Gavin and Stacey character ‘Smithy’ for Sport Relief.
The chat show host has recorded a six-minute video for the charity night in which he announces his intention to run for Fifa President.
In it he’s joined by footballing legends including Sir Geoff Hurst, Pele, Steven Gerrard and Jose Mourinho.
The announcement went live on iPlayer last night and will air on BBC One on Sport Relief Night on Friday March 18.
However the BBC felt the need to issue a disclaimer saying that Smithy’s bid was not serious. They said: ‘Although Smithy has taken the Cherry Tree Sunday league football team all the way to joint 9th position in the Billericay Echo Premier, he will in fact not be in the running for the top job at Fifa, as this is purely for entertainment and to raise money for Sport Relief 2016.’
Corden regularly films sketches for Sport and Comic Relief, including his England Team rant in 2009, Sports Personality Of The Year speech (2010), and Smithy Saves The Day (2011).
