Comedy playwriting contest opens

£10k prize in Liverpool Hope competition

Comedy scripts are being sought for a £10,000 playwriting prize – although writers must pay a fee to enter.

The winning play in the Liverpool Hope award will also be considered for production by the city’s acclaimed Royal Court theatre, while up to two further awards of £1,500 are also on offer.

Last year’s winner, comedian Katie Mulgrew, is currently developing her play Omnibus with director Bob Farquhar. It is due to be staged at Unity Theatre before a possible transfer to the Liverpool Royal Court next year.

Mulgrew, pictured, will judge this years awards alongside Les Dennis, Ladies Day playwright Amanda Whittington, writer Frank Cottrell Boyce, and others.

Writers over 18 from the UK and Ireland have until May 31 to submit their comedy stage play here. However there is a £20 entry fee. The winner will be named in spring 2017.

The first Liverpool Hope Playwriting Prize attracted more than 200 scripts.
