Drifters drifts back to E4
E4 has ordered a third series of Drifters, the comedy about three broke friends trying to make a go of life after graduation.
Writer-performer Jessica Knappett broke the news on Twitter, saying: “There is going to be a Drifters Series 3. If I could sum up my feelings in one word, it would be “employed”.’
She stars as Meg in the Leeds-based comedy, alongside Lydia Rose Bewley and Lauren O’Rourke.
Knappett added: 'It’s a joy to write this filthy silliness knowing I’ll get to perform it with two of my best mates who can't say no because I'm the boss lady and they have to do whatever I say. Expect more degrading jobs, skint desperation and atrocious sex. And there will be a wedding…'
Channel 4 comedy commissioning editor, Rachel Springett added: 'Jessica is a formidable talent who we are thrilled to working with on this third series of Drifters. We look forward to seeing what chaos and hilarity Jessica has in store for the girls this time around.'
Drifters launched in October 2013, attracting an average audience of just over 500,000. A second run, also of six episodes, aired a year later. Guest stars have included Bob Mortimer and Arabella Weir – who played Meg’s parents – and Nick Mohammed.
Described as ‘loud, brash and filthy’, and inviting comparisons with The Inbetweeners, the comedy has divided critics. Digital Spy called it ‘one of the worst comedies of any year’ while The Guardian said: ‘You’re never far from a laugh with Jessica Knappett’s comedy of early 20s malaise.’
