Catastrophe up for top TV award

A tight 5: May 20

CATASTROPHE, Sharon Horgan and Rob Delaney's Channel 4 comedy has been shortlisted for the best new programme of the year in the Edinburgh TV Awards, awarded during the city's TV festival in August. It faces competition from Fortitude, Happy Valley, Marvellous, The Honourable Woman and The Island with Bear Grylls.

DON'T tell Stewart Lee but Del Boy falling through the bar in Only Fools And Horses has again topped a poll of comedy moments. It was voted the best comedy accident in a publicity-seeking survey from an insurance company that predictably said: 'Sadly such accidents wouldn't feel nearly so funny in real life and the serious side of the story is the potential financial consequence of taking a tumble that sees you out of work for a while.'

STAND-UP Sarah Campbell has been appointed a contract writer with the BBC radio comedy department. She and Liam Beirne, who has contributed to the likes of Newsjack and The Now Show, take up the year-long role writing on a raft of shows from September. Campbell said: 'My parents cried when I told them and I'm 90 per cent sure it was from joy.'

THE remaining places in the Chortle Student Comedy Award Final have been filled by Stephen Ryan, Lauren Pattison, Liam Pickford and Daniel Elliot following the second semi-final in London last night. The final, hosted by Mark Watson, takes place at 10pm on August 24 at the Edinburgh Fringe. Tickets are on sale now.

WEST END comedy Bad Jews has extended its run at the Arts Theatre for six more weeks, now ending on July 11. Click here for Chortle's review of the play. The production was formerly at the centre of controversy when its adverts were banned from the Tube.
