More than £78million was raised during yesterday's Red Nose Night TV broadcast – bringing the total raised over 30 years to more than £1billion.

Comic Relief founder Richard Curtis said he was 'enormously proud' of the charity's achievements.

'This is a very strange moment for me,' he said. 'When a bunch of comedians got together all those years ago we dreamed of raising a million or two, and never imagined the generosity that would be shown by the British public for so many years.'

Highlights of the telethon included Rowan Atkinson and Dawn French reprising their roles as Mr Bean and The Vicar Of Dibley and David Walliams appearing in a sketch with Professor Stephen Hawking.

Johnny Vegas, Patrick Kielty, Vic Reeves, Jack Dee and Nick Helm took to the stage as a spoof version of One Direction; and James Bond stars Daniel Craig and Sir Roger Moore starred in a 007 mockumentary.
