Let's make Rik No 1
A campaign has been launched to drive Rik Mayall's World Cup anthem Noble England to the top of the charts.
Mayall released the song for the last Wold Cup in 2010, based on Shakespeare’s Henry V speech, but it failed to make much of an impact.
At the time, Mayall said: 'Football chants are one of the great traditions of following football and Shakespeare is also part of our national heritage. It seemed only natural that they should go together.'
Jon Morter – the DJ behind the successful campaign to make Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name Of the 2009 Christmas No 1 in protest against the X Factor – has thrown his weight behind the new bid.
Now Morter – a self-styled 'chart hijacker' – says: 'It would be a great thing for Rik’s memory. He was a comedy legend. Rage Against The Machine was more of a protest whereas this campaign seems to be a way of displaying respect. It’s a vehicle for a lot of people to say something and it would be a great accolade.
'In 2010 the song didn’t do so well because there were so many others out there. It’s a cruel irony that on the eve of the World Cup we have lost him. It’s now time for everyone to wake up to this fantastic song.'
A Facebook page dedicated to making Noble England number one currently has 3,000 ‘likes’ within a few hours of it being posted yesterday. Buy the track here.

It is one of several comedy bids for a World Cup hit; Monty Python have recorded a new version of Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life; Omid Djalili has release Going Out (To Do It Again) and Keith Allen's band Fat Les, have rereleased Who Invented Fish & Chips?
