Myfanwy Moore returns from ITV

The BBC has named Myfanwy Moore as its new controller of UK comedy production.

She will be responsible for the BBC’s in-housed comedy department, the most prolific producer of TV and radio comedy in the UK.

Its recent shows include Mrs Brown's Boys, Miranda, The Thick Of It , Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle an Bluestone 42 – and, on radio, The News Quiz, I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, Just A Minute and The Now Show

The role will see her leading the BBC In-House Comedy department, the most prolific comedy producer in the UK. Its formidable heritage, with such shows as The Office, Goodness Gracious Me and Absolutely Fabulous, has been carried forward to the present day with hits like Mrs Brown's Boys, Miranda, The Thick Of It and Twenty Twelve.

She will also oversee BBC Radio comedy, whose output includes such iconic shows as The News Quiz, I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, Just A Minute and The Now Show.

Moore returns to the BBC from ITV, where as commissioning editor of comedy she has been responsible for reviving the broadcaster’s commitment in scripted comedy, including Birds Of A Feather, Plebs, Vicious and The Job Lot.

Before ITV she was editor of new comedy at the BBC from 1997 to 2005 (with a year off at UKPlay) where she developed Little Britain with Matt Lucas and David Walliams. Other executive producer credits from that time included The Mitchell And Webb Situation, The Dave Gorman Collection, Attention Scum and The Full Mountie with Jack Dee.

And from 1995 to 1997 she launched the Paramount Comedy Channel, as Director of Programmes, where she developed Spaced with LWT.

Moore said: ‘I have loved my time at ITV, but as any comedy geek knows, running BBC in-house comedy - the birthplace of so many well-loved and enduring shows that have shaped popular culture - is an opportunity that is hard to turn down. And I am a geek.’

Her predecessor, Mark Freeland, who will now be her boss as he has been promoted, says: ‘Myfanwy has a fantastic, well deserved reputation and a passion and eye for comedy talent. I cannot wait to welcome her back to the BBC and see how she takes comedy to new and funny places.’
