BBC Three orders a second series of Nick Helm sitcom

BBC Three has commissioned a second series of Nick Helm sitcom Uncle.

Helm said: ‘I am gobsmacked that I have finally been involved in something that people like enough to warrant the need for more of it.

‘I am looking forward to working with all the cast and crew again as making the first series was genuinely one of the most fun experiences I've ever had whilst still legitimately being able to call it work.’

The first six-part series came to an end tonight. Episode one attracted 550,000 viewers overnight, but when figures were aggregated over seven days, including iPlayer, the audience reached 2.6million.

In the show – which was originally made as a Channel 4 pilot before being picked up by the BBC – Helm plats a dissolute, out-of work musician who forges an unlikely alliance with his 12-year-old nephew Errol, played by Elliot Speller-Gillot.

Henry Normal, managing director of production company Baby Cow, said: ‘You have to give respect to the BBC for taking a leap of faith on this show. It's a brave and different commission for BBC Three comedy. I love this show. It’s a comedy with heart and bite and truth.’

The series is written and directed by Oliver Refson and was commissioned by Zai Bennett, the controller of BBC Three and Shane Allen, the BBC’s controller of comedy commissioning.

There is no news on when the second series will air.
