New sitcom for George Lopez
George Lopez is to make a sitcom about a working-class Mexican-American made good.
The stand-up has signed a deal for an initial ten episodes of the show, Saint George, for the FX network.
Under the so-called 10/90 contract, if those shows attract big enough ratings, another 90 will be commissioned, Hollywood website Deadline reports.
It is the same quick-turnaround model that the broadcaster used with the Charlie Sheen comedy Anger Management, after he left Two And A Half Men.
Lopez, who has been working on the show since 2012, will play a recently divorced dada of an 11-year-old son. The comedy revolves around juggling his family – including his demanding ex-wife and an overbearing mother who lives with him – his business, and community work teaching at a night school.
The comedian perviously had an eponymous sitcom which ran for 120 episodes on ABC, and continues to be shown in syndication.
Kevin Beggs, from producers Lionsgate, said: ‘In the tradition of George’s frank and fearless stand-up comedy, Saint George will reflect his no-holds-barred comedic take on the tensions surrounding race, class, sex and family life in Los Angeles through the eyes of a man straddling two separate culture.’
FX’s Chuck Saftler added: ‘George Lopez is an incredibly gifted actor-producer and one of the most talented comedians in the business.’
Production starts in August.
