Two years for Jeng Dokchik

A Thai comedian has been jailed for insulting the monarchy.

Jeng Dokchik, who is also a prominent activist in the country’s ‘red-shirt’ opposition movement, was sentenced to two years for a speech he made two years ago.

He was jailed under tough lese majeste laws intended to protect 85-year-old King Bhumibol Adulyadej – but which have been criticised for suppressing free speech

Dokchik,whose real name is Yossawaris Chuklom, made his comments at a political rally in September 2010. It came a few months after red-shirt protesters occupied key parts of Bangkok, demanding the government step down. More than 90 civilians and soldiers were killed in the protests.

The 54-year-old intends to appeal against the verdict.
