Nicholas Parsons leads Sony Radio Award victors

Nicholas Parsons has won gold at the Sony Radio Awards – but at 88, he still wasn't the oldest winner last night.

That honour went to 90-year-old Betty Smith, half of the OAP double act Betty And Beryl, who host a weekly show on Radio Humberside.

Their Saturday evening show won the best entertainment category, beating Absolute Radio's Frank Skinner and 6 Music's Adam and Joe. Judges said: 'a joyous, entertaining double act, having fun with the medium and unconstrained by any ingrained ideas of what works and what doesn't. They give a voice to a sector of society unrepresented on radio, and do it with a joy that puts many of their fellow broadcasters to shame'

As she arrived at last night's ceremony Betty – whose co-star Beryl Renwick is 86, said: 'It's quite a do, isn't it?'

Parsons won the prestigious gold lifetime achievement award as he celebrates 45 years as chairman of Radio 4's Just A Minute.

Meanwhile, Mark Steel's In Town won the comedy prize, ahead of Adam & Joe, Another Case Of Milton Jones, Down The Line and The National Theatre Of Brent's Iconic Icons.
