First Aidan: Meet the People's Choice champ

Judges' student favourites revealed, too

Irish screenwriting student Aidan Greene has won the People's Choice vote in the Chortle Student Comedy Award.

The 21-year-old, who studies at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, will now perform in one of the two semi-finals, either in Manchester on May 16 and London on May 21

He said: 'My style of comedy would be quite self-deprecating and observational mainly taking stories from my own life. I am influenced by the likes of Simon Amstell, Mike Birbiglia, Dylan Moran and Woody Allen.'

Just over 1,000 votes were polled.

Chortle judges have also chosen the ten best runners-up from all 13 regional heats to go forward to the semi-finals – ahead of the grand final at the Edinburgh Fringe in August.

They are: Adam Mitchell, Alexander Bennett, Bhargav Narayanan Dalia Malek, Dean Sekhon Eddie O'Dwyer, Kwame Asante, Manraj Bahra, Matt Holmes and Rachel Slater.

This year's competition is powered by The Sims 3, allowing us to offer the biggest ever first prize of £2,500.
