Drunk comic banned from Perth festival
British stand-up Bob Slayer has been thrown off the programme of an Australian fringe festival – for being ‘drunk and inappropriate’.
Organisers of Fringe World in Perth might have known what to expect from Slayer – a former rock tour manager turned comedian – from the title of his show: Bob Slayer Will Outdrink Australia.
But when he appeared worse for wear on a late-night show on Thursday, it proved too much, and he had to be ejected by security guards.
One audience member at the show – Marcel Lucont’s Cabaret Fantastique – tweeted: ‘Bob Slayer is described in program as 'hilariously drunk and deranged'. Last night he was just drunk.’
The punter, Bret Treasure, added: ‘Marcel Lucont was very good. Some performers disappointingly average and drunk. One was taken away by security.’
Following the incident, Slayer was axed from the festival programme and banned from all festival venues.
‘It became apparent that he had taken his personal mandate to “outdrink Australia” past the confines of his own show,’ festival director Marcus Canning told the West Australian.
Refunds have been given for tickets already bought for Slayer's remaining six shows and audience members who saw Slayer at the Spiegeltent have been offered free tickets to another show instead.
Slayer – whose blurb promised ‘no rules, no limits, no refunds!’ – could not be contacted for comment.
But when he arrived down under he posted a blog saying: ‘I am here in Australia. I am waiting for things to happen.’
And in a Q&A with a local newspaper before the festival started, Slayer said he would spend his spare time in Perth ‘mostly drinking and visiting breweries’.
Slayer won the Malcolm Hardee Cunning Stunt Award for the best publicity stunt at last year’s Edinburgh Fringe, for his campaign of adding cartoon penises to other comedians’ posters to promote the act Kunt & The Gang.
He is due to take his show to the Adelaide Fringe later this month.
