Spamalot: Now on tour

Python musical to hit the road

The Monty Python musical Spamalot is to go on tour, headlined by Oliver! star Jodie Prenger.

She will play the Lady Of The Lake when the show opens in Wimbledon, South London, on May 29, as well as subsequent dates in Bromley, Brighton and Manchester.

Another actress will take over for the rest of the tour, which is currently booking to January 2011.

The musical was originally due to go on tour in April last year, after closing in the West End after two and a half years, but it was cancelled due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’. A new producer, Ambassador Theatre Group, is now staging the tour.

Eric Idle, who wrote the musical with John Du Prez, will provide the voice of God. He also says he’d love to do a film adaptation of the musical, which is ‘lovingly ripped off’ from 1975’s Monty Python And The Holy Grail

‘It's always in my mind and I'll find the right opportunity, the right place and way to do it,’ he said. ‘It has to be funny; the basic thing is, you have to get it right.

‘It wasn't easy to adapt Spamalot as a Broadway musical. The Holy Grail is not much of a play. You work on it and find things that will work in the medium.

‘What I really don't want to do is to remake the Holy Grail because that's like remaking A Hard Day's Night.’
