Strong showing for TV comedies

Carr, McIntyre win big audiences

Comedy shows attracted big TV audiences over the weekend; with Alan Carr, Michael McIntrye and Have I Got News For You all attracting strong viewing figures.

Carr’s new talk show Chatty Man attracted 1.9million viewers last night – up more than 400,000 on the average audience Channel 4 normally gets in that 10pm slot.

The show attracted a further 183,000 when it aired an hour later on C4+1 at 11pm, according to the unofficial overnight figures.

And on Saturday Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, featuring John Bishop, Sarah Millican, Mick Ferry and Jason Manford, attracted 4.7 million viewers – down slightly on the five million who watched the opening episode.

But the programme’s audience share remained steady at 24 per cent, as fewer people were watching TV overall on a warm summer’s night. The roadshow has also been consistently the most-watched show on the BBC iPlayer.

BBC Two also scored well on Saturday night with the extended repeat of the previous day’s Have I Got News For You, with guest host Lee Mack and panellists Shappi Khorsandi and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, bringing in a strong 2.2million.

The only weak point for comedy was ITV1 sitcom Mumbai Calling, set in an Indian call centre, which attracted a disappointing 2.1million viewers.
