A gambling man

Coogan's new BBC comedy

Steve Coogan is to star as a gambling addict in a new BBC One comedy-drama.

Royle Family star Craig Cash is co-writing the three-part show Sunshine with his long-term collaborator, Phil Mealey.

Coogan will star as Bing, a family man with a gambling problem, while veteran actor Bernard Hill will play his father, George.

Filming has already begun on the drama on location in Stockport and Salford, and the mini-series is due to be broadcast this autumn.

BBC comedy controller, Lucy Lumsden, who commissioned the show, said: ‘With the combined talents of Craig Cash, Phil Mealey and Steve Coogan, Sunshine is a significant comedy drama from the north for BBC1.’

The show is the first BBC comedy to be made by Ash and Mealey’s own production company, Jellylegs.
