Peep Show vs Thick Of It

Showdown at TV awards

Peep Show and The Thick Of It dominate the comedy shortlists for the Royal Television Society Awards, announced today.

Both have been nominated in the best sitcom/comedy-drama category alongside The Mighty Boosh.

Both shows also feature in the best comedy performance category, where Peep Show’s David Mitchell and Robert Webb share a nomination opposite The Thick Of It’s Peter Capaldi, and Jack Dee for Lead Balloon.

And the teams that script both shows are also shortlisted in the writing category, alongside Graham Linehan for The IT Crowd. It gives Jesse Armstrong two shots at the accolade, as he both co-wrote Peep Show with Sam Bain, as well as being part of the Armando Iannucci-led team behind The Thick Of It.

Meanwhile, the best entertainment nominees are QI, Strictly Come Dancing and The Armstrong & Miller Show; while those for best entertainment performance are Stephen Fry for QI, Harry Hill for TV Burp and Ant and Dec for both I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! and Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.

E4’s Fonejacker is up for best digital channel programme award, alongside Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe for BBC4 and The Trial Of Tony Blair for More4.

And Flight Of The Conchords, which BBC4 bought from HBO, has a shot at best international programme, where it faces tough competition from Heroes and Ugly Betty.

The RTS awards will be presented on Wednesday March 19 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, London.
