Kingdom of comedy
Paul Whitehouse is planning to reunite with his Fast Show co-star Charlie Higson for a new show spoofing celebrity documentaries.
The pair are currently waiting for the green light for their series, provisionally titled Bellamy’s Kingdom, which they hope to film next year.
Higson said the idea was inspired by ‘all these documentaries on about how brilliant Britain is’, presented by the likes of David Dimbleby, Billy Connolly, Jamie Oliver and Alan Titchmarsh.
He added: ‘They’re all saying aren’t our buildings great, isn’t our wildlife brilliant, look at our coastline, don’t we have fantastic, er, pebbles, so we’re thinking of something like that where our character goes out and talks to people about "What is Britain today?"’
Whitehouse added that they chose to work on a new series, rather than revive the Fast Show, despite a successful performance at the Dominion Theatre last month.
‘I know everyone from Led Zeppelin to the Spice Girls is making a comeback at the moment – the Jam even reformed without Paul Weller – but the show at the Dominion was a one-off,’ he told the Sunday Times.
Higson added: ‘We did think about doing a tour but we didn’t want people saying, "It’s not as good as it was, it’s a bit stale, they’re too old, comedy has moved on" – although of course it hasn’t.’
