Vote of confidence
Peter Kay has topped yet another poll to find the funniest people alive.
The Phoenix Nights star beat Ricky Gervais into second place in a survey of 17,000 people.
The poll was conducted by sex-and-sport-obsessed lads’ mag Zoo, which did not restrict its shortlist to comedians. So President George Bush came 17th,Big Brother’s Jade Goody 46th, and chef Gordon Ramsay at 76.
Kay was named best stand-up by FHM readers last year, and the funniest man alive by Chortle readers in 2003, although by the following year he was voted the most over-rated comic, to the ire of his many fans.
Zoo magazine’s deputy editor Ben Knowles said: ‘Peter Kay's position at the top is no surprise. His humour is classically British.
‘His massive success is built on his ability to be rude without offending people.
‘With George Bush, the joke is on him... and how ridiculous people think he is.’
The top ten was
- Peter Kay
- Ricky Gervais
- Lee Evans
- Eddie Izzard
- Billy Connolly
- Dylan Moran
- Bill Bailey
- Noel Fielding and Julian Barratt
- Jimmy Carr
- Matt Lucas and David Walliams
