Questions in the House

B'stard crops up in Commons debate

Rik Mayall’s revival of Alan B’stard has prompted questions in the House of Commons.

The comic is about to embark on a stage tour of his New Statesman character, in which the ruthless MP has switched from the Conservatives to new Labour.

And his crossing the floor of the House prompted a question from Tory MP Stephen Crabb at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday.

The MP for Preseli Pembrokeshire asked Tony Blair: ‘Could the Prime Minister tell us which of his policies was responsible for the defection to Labour of Mr Alan B'Stard?’

The PM replied, rather unsportingly: ‘I am not in a position to comment on Mr. B'Stard,’ before giving the party line on how well Labour were doing.

Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran have written a new episode of The New Statesman, entitled Episode 2006: The Blair B’Stard project, for the stage tour.

It kicks off in Brighton on April 19 before touring the country.
