Cryer celebrates his 70th birthday

Veteran comic Barry Cryer is to celebrate his 70th birthday next month with a star-studded gig in London.

Among those marking his 50-year comedy career will be Arthur Smith, Jeremy Hardy and legendary writers Galton and Simpson.

Plus there will be video links from the likes of Eddie Izzard, Stanley Baxter, Paul Merton, Ross Noble, Bill Bailey and Humphrey Lyttleton.

Cryer actually turns 70 on Wednesday next week, but the gig is on Thursday April 14, at the Hackney Empire.

The show will raise money for the Entertainment Artistes Benevolent Fund and specificallyBrinsworth House, the retirement home “for clapped-out variety entertainers”. For tickets, priced £10 to £35, call 020 8985 2424.

Over his career, Cryer has written for almost every big name in comedy,  including Morecambe and Wise, Tommy Cooper, Dick  Emery, Dave Allen, Les Dawson, Bob Hope, George Burns, the Two  Ronnies, Kenny Everett, Harry Secombe, Billy Connolly, Jasper Carrott and Richard Pryor.
