Gervais tops TV clips poll

It’s the sort of news that would send David Brent’s raging ego into overdrive.

When TV industry insiders were asked to name their favourite piece of BBC footage – including such unforgettable moments as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the 1980 Iranian Embassy siege and the moon landing –  they chose Ricky Gervais dancing like a lunatic instead.

The much-replayed moment from The Office was voted for by one in five of the 5,000 people who revealed their favourite BBC clip in a poll in Broadcast magazine.

Ricky said: "I'm not surprised the dance beat the moon landing. That, by his own admission was just a small step. Mine was a high kick, a little skip, a full twirl and a crab impression."

Other favourites, which will be published in tomorrow’s edition of the trade paper, included scenes from Blackadder Goes Forth, Morecambe and Wise and Dad's Army.

Simon Gibbs, managing director of BBC Motion Gallery, which licenses clips, said of the results: “It is a fascinating look at great television."
