Peter Kay beats The Simpsons

Peter Kay has proved more popular than The Simpsons.

The first instalment of his Phoenix Nights spin-off Max And Paddy’s Road To Nowhere attracted 3.6 million viewers to Channel 4 on Friday night – 300,000 more than The Simpsons that preceded it.

It means one in seven people watching TV at 9.30pm were watching the exploits of the nightclub bouncers.

But it wasn’t enough to beat Des Lynam hosting Have I Got News for You on BBC1, which attracted 5.2 million viewers.

And the third show in Channel 4’s new Friday night comedy line-up, Peep Show, drew 1.8 million viewers, losing out to Stephen Fry’s QI panel game QI, which was seen by 2.6 million people on BBC2.
