Kay mulls a third series

Phoenix Nights could return for a third series, Peter Kay has announced.

As Channel 4 plans to air the spin-off, Max & Paddy’s Road To Nowhere on Friday, the Bolton comic says he hasn’t ruled out a return to the show that made his name.

He said that in the two years the show has been off the air, he has written nearly enough material for another series.

But he added that he was wary of his sitcom becoming “Channel 4’s Last Of The Summer Wine”.

In an interview with today’s Radio Times, Kay said: “I love Phoenix Nights so much, but I don’t want it to be one of those programmes where people go, ‘Oh, it went off a bit’

“But I’m always writing stuff down for Phoenix Nights. In fact, I’ve got so much stuff already I’ll probably have enough for another series.”

But he may have to create it without co-writer Dave Spikey, who has moved on to his own projects. His newspaper-based comedy Dead Man Weds, starring Johnny Vegas, has gone into production for ITV1.
