Dwarf's big day

Sci-fi sitcom finally gets DVD release

The first series of Red Dwarf is to be released on DVD, following a deluge of requests from fans.

It's the first time any episodes of the cult comedy has been available on disc, even though BBC Wordwide says is one of the most-requested shows for release.

Original cast members Craig Charles, Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules and Norman Lovett reunited to record a special commentary for the DVD.

Writer Doug Naylor said: "We are really thrilled that this is the finally available - there is a whole heap of bonus material that the fans will enjoy."

As well as the six episodes in the 1988 series, the two-discs also includes 90 minutes of extras, such as deleted scenes, a writers' commentary and out-takes.

Red Dwarf still holds the record for being BBC2's longest-running and highest-rating sitcom, and more than 2.3million videos have been sold.

DVD producer Ross McGinley said: "We have waited a long time for this release because we wanted to make sure we got the best product possible on the market.

"When BBC Worldwide first tipped its toe into the waters of DVD, this was the first one we thought of doing, but knew it had to be perfect. But then we had no experience, now we know what we're doing - and the awards to prove it."

Series 2 of Red Dwarf is scheduled for release in February, to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the show.

In the meantime, you can pre-order series one - which is due out on November 4 - from Amazon.co.uk for a £5 discount. Click here to order.
