Angus keeps his job

...but he'll be under scrutiny

Angus Deayton has kept his job hosting Have I Got News For You - but BBC chiefs will be keeping a close eye on him.

It had been reported that he was due to be axed following tabloid revelations about cocaine and sex sessions with prostitutes.

But BBC1 controller Lorraine Heggessey said he would continue in the role, though the situation would be monitored.

She said: "Angus is going to continue to present Have I Got News For You and Before They Were Famous.

"His private life is his private life. He more than got his comeuppance on Have I Got News For You. In a way it was more difficult for him to do the show than not do the show."

Heggessey was speaking at the launch of the new BBC1 schedules, which include:

  • Harry Enfied in Celeb, the adaptation of the Private Eye cartoon
  • Wild West, a new sitcom by Men Behaving Badly creator Simon Nye, set in a remote Post Office and starring Dawn French and Catherine Tate
  • Martin Clunes hosting a show charting the history of the sitcom.
  • New series of Bedtime, My Family, Jonathan Ross and Johnny Vaughan Tonight
