Bailey to host new act final

Bill Bailey is to host the final of one of Britain's biggest new comedy competitions.

The Black Books star has been signed up to compere the climax of So You Think You're Funny? at the Edinburgh festival.

Previous finals have been hosted by Graham Norton, who is now tied up with the rigours of a daily chat show.

More than 300 acts entered the Channel 4-backed contest, and 56 will go to Edinburgh for a series of heats during the Fringe.

Among those in the final stages are bank clerks, bus drivers, students and a toy demonstrator.

Winners of these shows will go on to the final at the Gilded Balloon Teviot on August 22, to compete for the £2,000 top prizes. Runners-up collect £1,000 and £750.

Previous winners include Tommy Tiernan, Peter Kay and Dylan Moran (full list)

Robert Popper from Channel 4's entertainment department said: "So You Think You're Funny? offers budding comics a fantastic opportunity to gain confidence in their stand-up while getting valuable exposure. For us at Channel 4, it's a wonderful chance to spot and nurture really fresh talent.

"The final should be a top night"
