Chortle Student Award 2024: Watch the entrants from week one

First three semi-finalists named

Here are all the competitors at the first three heats of the Chortle Student Comedy Award held last week.

The Edinburgh heat at Monkey Barrel was  won by Jade Kelly, 29, who is studying a postgraduate diploma in education at Edinburgh University and describes her comedy as ‘a mixture of storytelling and making a fool of boys in the front row’.

The Newcastle heat at Alphabetti Theatre was won by Jack Simmonds, a 24-year-old criminology PhD student at Durham University.

And in St Andrews last night, James Clark – a 22-year-old maths and physics student there – went through to the semi-finals.

Our next heat is at Aces And Eights in Tufnell Park, North London, on Monday. Tickets

Thanks for reading. If you find Chortle’s coverage of the comedy scene useful or interesting, please consider supporting us with a monthly or one-off ko-fi donation.
Any money you contribute will directly fund more reviews, interviews and features – the sort of in-depth coverage that is increasingly difficult to fund from ever-squeezed advertising income, but which we think the UK’s vibrant comedy scene deserves.
