Edinburgh 10 x10: Shows from podcasters

1. Richard Herring

Like a real-life version of the Truman Show, Richard Herring’s entire waking life seems to be available to download. His output made headlines recently when Stephen Fry choose Herring’s Leicester Square Podcast to reveal that depression led him to try to take his own life last year. Now Herring returns to the chat show format for these shows – and they are usually a lot more cheerful than that (as, indeed was the bulk of the Fry episode). The Stand, 14:10. Meanwhile, his stand-up show We’re All Going To Die, is on at the Pleasance at 20:00.

2. Peacock & Gamble

This duo really made a name for themselves with their Chortle-hosted podcasts, racking up the award nominations as they went. Last year’s Fringe show was great knockabout fun, and now they’re back promising more ‘electrifying stupidity’ and high-energy childishness, with their 2013 offering Heart-throbs. Pleasance Courtyard, 21:45

3. The Comedians’ Comedian

Essential listening for anyone who wants to known the inside track on writing and performing comedy. Every day at the Fringe charming host Stuart Goldsmith invites big stars and circuit names to talk about their art and craft, and gives them the time to answer in depth. And often the lesser well-known acts are the more revealing. Gilded Balloon, 17:15

4. Do The Right Thing

Another of our favourite podcasts, this is like a naughtier version of a Radio 4 panel show, as host Danielle Ward poses often dark dilemmas to the panel of comedians, captained by Margaret Cabourn-Smith and the intolerant Michael Legge. Quirky and funny, four episodes are being recorded at the Fringe. Pleasance Courtyard, 23:20, August 18th to 21st only

5. Greg Proops

The erudite and sarcastic US comic veteran will be recording a couple of episodes of his Smartest Man In The World podcast at the Gilded Balloon on August 3rd, 10th and 15th – while also performing his more considered stand-up show every night until the 14th. Stand-up: 21:00; Podcast 22:15; Gilded Balloon

6. Amnesty’s Secret Comedy Podcasts

Amnesty has a long association with comedy, thanks to the Secret Policeman’s Balls... and what stand-up wouldn’t want to be associated with an organisation that’s done so much to champion free speech. That’s why they can attract top stars to projects like this, with confirmed names so far including Julian Clary in his only Fringe appearance, Ed Byrne and The Boy With Tape On His Face. Underbelly Bristo Square, 13:20

7. Tig Notaro

She’s probably best known in comedy circles for the emotionally open stand-up set she delivered soon after she was diagnosed with cancer. The subsequent recording, championed by Louis CK, sold more than 100,000 copies. But Tig Notaro is also a successful podcaster, whose series Professor Blastoff has topped the iTunes comedy chart in the States. This is her new stand-up show, Boyish Girl Interrupted. Gilded Balloon Teviot, 18:45, August 16th to 25th only

7. Stephen Hill

Hill hosts the Metal Hammer podcast, but he’s also a comedian of more than half a dozen years’ standing, now making his solo Fringe debut after several shared-bill visits. The theme of Livid Failure is trying, and failing, in everything he’s every attempted.. That does not auger well. The Dram House Upstairs, 20:30, August 12th to 24th only

8.Mike Shephard

Shephard is one of the brains behind the Tin Can Podcast, which offers a new drama or comedy show each week. It’s an ambitious project, bur probably one that put him in good stead for his Edinburgh show, looking at: Everything That Happened in the 20th Century, Seen Through The Eyes Of A Liar. Laughing Horse @ The Counting House, 15:15

9. Graham Clark

Canadian Clark is one of the presenters of Stop Podcasting Yourself, which made the news earlier this month when his co-host Dave Shumka survived a shooting at point-blank range after a comedy show. Expect fewer gunshots here... Assembly Roxy, 19:00

10. Wireless Podcast

A new, improvised Fifties style radio play every day. Of course, you can’t throw a Scotch pie in Edinburgh in August without it hitting member of an improv group, but this lot are one of very few to commit their work to the internet too. Laughing Horse @ The Free Sisters, 19:30
