Easily the finest work of art of the modern era
Well-to-do freestyle rapper MC Hammersmith, currently performing at the Edinburgh Fringe, shares his Perfect Playlist of comedy favourites.
Vines That Keep Me Alive (15 minute Vine compilation)
I'm fully aware that most comedians in these Chortle Perfect Playlists seem to have picked old bad things like Friends, The Good Life, and Jeeves and Wooster. That's fine if you like white people being boring.
But Vine compilations are funnier. And this one is a firm favourite. It's got all the classics: I could have dropped my croissant. Look at this graph. Oh my god they were roommates. More like Hurricane Tortilla. Roadwork ahead? Yeah I sure hope it does. Free Shava-ka-doo. All in the first two minutes!
Kenny Beats and Zack Fox Freestyle
Okay, the Vine compilation opened the floodgates. I've abandoned trying to think of old TV stand-up specials or sitcoms I like, and have instead resorted to YouTube videos, because they're better.
In this, Kenny Beats invites a guest rapper to freestyle over one of his beats. He invites Zack Fox, who proceeds to drop some of the greatest punchlines in the history of hip-hop. ‘If you ain't a Christian I'mma stab you in the face.’ ‘I take the condom off and drunk my nut it's delicious’. ‘I’mma dip my balls into some thousand island dressing’.
Halfway through, he even shoutouts mental illness, which is really important.
Everybody say "sausage" keep it going
NOW we're talking. This is top quality stuff. This lad in an American high school cafeteria instructs his friends to say the word ‘sausage’ at the end of every line of his rap. And boy, does he have bars!
In this rap, we (the audience) discover that the word sausage can mean many things (a sausage, or a penis).
We discover that sausage can be ordered at places we don't have in Britain (IHOP). And we also discover the other things that he likes (bacon, pancakes, and waffles). Sausage!
Everybody say "sausage" keep it going (white girl edition)
Exactly the same joke, but rocket-launched to new comedic heights.
Everything about this version heightens the initial comedic premise perfectly.
In this rap, we (the audience) discover that that you can read books entirely about sausage.
We discover that people of all builds, hair colours, genders, and sexualities, can like sausage.
And we also discover that you can just scream in panic and it's still a great bar.
Sausage!
Craic Boi Mental: Trans People Are My Friends
Irish rapper Craic Boi Mental went viral last year with this stone-cold banger.
In it, he repeatedly screams that trans people are his friends, and that transphobes ‘gon catch these hands’, and should ‘shut their fucking mouths’.
He is a staunch supporter of equal rights for trans people, and performs live to his legions of fans draped in a huge trans pride flag.
I showed this to someone recently, who questioned whether Craic Boi Mental was being sarcastic. Nope! He is genuinely a sweetheart who is prepared to absolutely batter TERFs, all whilst screaming about it in his trademark Cork accent. What's not to love?
This 16-year-old YouTube video of a man jumping into a wall
Does what it says on the tin. A man screams something in Russian. He turns around, sprints at a wall, jumps, and full body-slaps it like a pancake.
Saw this in 2007 and literally haven't laughed at anything harder since. Still watch it multiple times a week. Easily the finest work of art of the modern era.
