Ken Cheng scoops radio comedy award

And Please Use Other Door named best sketch show

Ken Cheng has won a BBC Audio Drama Award for his stand-up show Chinese Comedian.

The Radio 4 programme, produced by fellow comedian Rajiv Karia, was named best long-form scripted comedy a the ceremony last night.

In apparent reference to last week’s Oscars, Cheng tweeted: ‘It's been a good week for east asians winning awards’.

And Radio 4 comedy chief Julia McKenzie said she was ‘so thrilled’ for his success.`

Winning the award for best sketch comedy was Please Use Other Door, a series from writers new to radio based around overheard conversations take place over the course of the day.

It was created by Bill Dare, the producer behind fellow Radio 4 comedies  Dead Ringers and The Now Shopw.

Judges said: ‘With original premises unfolding in genuinely surprising ways, our winner offered fresh twists and imaginative jokes within the format of a traditional sketch half-hour.

‘That these inventive ideas come from writers new to radio only makes their achievement all the more impressive.’
