Former comedy reviewer Fern Brady first tried stand up after the magazine she worked for suggested she write an article where she 'faked it' as a comedian. She enjoyed it so much that one year on, she embarked on a career as a stand-up, making the final of So You Think You're Funny at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2011, where she was placed joint third.
In 2021, her stand-up special Power & Chaos aired on BBC One and she also presented the Dave travelogue British as Folk alongside fellow comedians Ivo Graham and Darren Harriott.
She was a contestant in the 14th season of Taskmaster in 2022 and is author of the bestseller Strong Female Character, which in 2024 won the first Nero book award for non-fiction.

Comic makes Deadline's 'future of funny' list
Fern Brady has been named one of the top 15 comedians ‘on the verge of a big break’ by US-based entertainment industry website Deadline.
Reporters there quizzed sources to come up with the names they thought might hit the top of the industry in the coming years.
While Brady – the only UK act on the list - is well-known here, the release of her first Netflix special, Autistic Bikini Queen, earlier this year is seen as a springboard to American success.
Deadline said she is ‘known for her caustic wit, along with her exceptional writing and stagecraft’,while drawing attention the the success of her 2023 autobiography Strong Female Character, discussing everything from her Catholic upbringing and homelessness to her autism diagnosis.
The website said of its Future Of Funny list: ‘Generally speaking, our focus was on original voices, written material over crowd work, and comics who have not had their moment on one of these lists in years past.’
The other names on the list were: Chanel Ali, Jeff Arcuri, Katherine Blanford, Nico Carney, Aaron Chen (the only Australian on the list), Dina Hashem, Jordan Jensen, Matt Mathews, Chloe Radcliffe (who has had successful Edinburgh Fringe runs), Becky Robinson, Casey Rocket, KC Shornima, Gianmarco Soresi and René Vaca.
