Davey Connor has a hypnotically soothing voice, not always the best asset in stand-up. He’s an easy-listening comic and his natural warmth disarms the audience, creating bubbling laughter from the largely Scottish crowd throughout his hour.
A show without gimmicks, it was, for me, an extended club set, which would have been absolutely fine if it had just been more ambitious, more sparkling, more interesting. I don’t want to damn him with faint praise by calling it ‘competent’ but the other words that spring to mind are ‘pedestrian’ and ‘completely’.
He’s likeable and his personal stories about his son (he was a very young father) allow him to recall his own adolescent burgeoning sexuality and awkwardness. They are sweet enough tales, but the whole show hour never really shifts out of first gear.
I am a fan of low-key and low-wattage – I can’t bear the eyes and teeth approach that passes for performance with some acts – but this needed a lot more welly and better gags.
He cleverly ended on an energy-raising bit of dancing which sent out the audience with big grins on their faces. He went down well with the packed room, and the audience should be the ultimate arbiters, I suppose, but I’m afraid I found it a bit of a snooze. I just expected more from an Edinburgh show.
