Could Benidorm be making a TV comeback?

Creator Derren Litten returns to writing

Hopes that Benidorm may return have been given a boost after creator Derren Litten announced his return to writing.

He stepped back from TV in 2020 to open a karaoke bar in the resort where the ITV sitcom was based, which he called Mateo’s after the show's lothario barman.

But now he says he’s back, and says ‘certain TV channels’ are interested in what he’s working on – without going into details.

The original TV show ran for ten seasons from 2007 to 2018, attracting more than 8million viewers at its peak, followed by a live stage show featuring many of the original cast, which toured the UK for seven months in 2018 and 2019.

Writing on social media on Christmas Day, Litten said: ‘I would like to take this opportunity to make a public statement.

‘It's been a difficult decision but I have decided to return to writing for both television and theatre.

‘I have had clear, recent indications that certain TV channels are interested in my decision and I hope you will be watching the fruits of my labour in time to come.

‘Obviously there are always rumours surrounding such announcements but I would like to make it clear my decision to come out of retirement is purely to spend less time with my family.’

Fans were quick to express their hopes this would mark a return for the costa-based comedy.

One, called CJ, said: ‘Best Xmas present if this is Benidorm’; Glenda Lowe said: ‘Brilliant news! I hope that includes a new series of Benidorm’; and Daniel Cooper said: ‘Benidorm IMMEDIATELY. you heard what I said!’

Litten followed up Benidorm with the BBC sitcom Scarborough, starring Catherine Tyldesley and Jason Manford, but it lasted just one series.
