Ricky Gervais's disbelief at DVD's 18 certificate

Ricky Gervais has been left stunned after censors gave the Derek DVD an 18 certificate.

The British Board Of Film Classification ruled that sale of the comedy should be as restricted as the most gruesome horror fils because of its 'very strong language'.

Its though that the number of c-bombs in the special which brought the series to an end was the deciding factor.

Gervais posted on Facebook: 'They slapped an 18 certificate on me because I refused to bleep the "bad language". Anyway, fuck 'em.

'I just hope no 17-year-olds get to see it and have their lives ruined. The certification board said the reason it got an 18 certificate was because of too many cunts. I couldn't agree more.'

But he added that the ruling has not affected advance sales of the disc, which is released on October 26 and also stars Karl Pilkington, Kerry Godliman, David Earl and Kay Noone.

Other that the hour-long special, the other episodes in the Channel 4 series have been rated 15, for 'strong language and strong or moderate sex references' or 12.
