Radio 4 examines taboo in comedy

New series fronted by Julia Sutherland

Comics including Felicity Ward, Janey Godley and Fern Brady are to discuss using uncomfortable subjects for comedy in a new Radio 4 series.

It’s Funny And It’s True will mix stand-up and interview and be presented by fellow comedian Julia Sutherland, pictured. She previously fronted the BBC Radio Scotland series A Funny Kind Of World which similarly explored how comedy deals with hot topics.

Producer Richard Melvin, who is making the show with his company Dabster Productions, said: ‘It features comedians who joke about things you’re not meant to laugh at… experts at making us laugh at slightly uncomfortable subjects.’

Just two episodes have so far been ordered, which will be recorded this weekend and broadcast in July, although Melvin is hoping to secure more at the next round of commissioning.

They are being taped at The Stand in Glasgow at 5pm on Sunday, along with two new episodes of The John Moloney Show, which is also returning to Radio 4.

Tickets are free and available here.
