John Colleary At Cat Laughs 2009
Jovial John Colleary has a useful arsenal of comedy weapons at his disposal, not least his ability to mimic a range of accents. They’re not spot-on, but he captures their essence in fun caricature.

Much of his set is based on the Irish trait for low expectations, and nowhere is this better illustrated than in his entertaining comparison between Barack Obama – slim, enthusiastic, inspirational – and Irish Taoiseach Brian Cowen, an altogether less inspiring figure who carries more weight only literally, not metaphorically. There’s also the obligatory bit about the Irish drinking culture, but it’s sharply observed and given a twist as he’s a teetotaller.

Some of his material is not particularly ambitious – home makeover shows, the gut he developed at 40 and the beating he used to get as a child – but he has a knack to distilling them into a funny line, even if some of the build-up is routine.

The overall impression is of an enjoyably entertaining act.
